13 students honored for film achievements

Thirteen students representing nine colleges and universities received Student Academy Awards on Saturday from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which handed out gold, silver and bronze medals (with accompanying prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively) in various categories.

Gold medals were given to “Kavi,” by Gregg Helvey of USC (narrative); “The Last Mermaids,” by Liz Chae of Columbia U. (docu); “Pajama Gladiator,” by Glenn Harmon of Brigham Young U. (animation); and “Alice’s Attic,” by Robyn Yannoukos of UCLA (alternative).

The $1,000 honorary foreign film prize was awarded to “Elkland,” directed by Per Hanefjord of the Dramatic Institute in Stockholm.

Student filmmakers were honored at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, with actor Gary Oldman, animator Andreas Deja and Acad first VP Robert Rehme among the presenters.
