20th Century Props closes shop

Hollywood hits the auction block

Lions, tigers and T. rex? Thousands of obscure and prominent props are on the auction block as Harvey Schwartz’s 20th Century Props closes its doors after 40 years.

The auction is a rare glimpse into the work behind the magic of Hollywood, and a bizarre place where safari animals, mermaids and the Wild West are separated only by metal shelving units.

Aliens from “The X-Files,” Howard Hughes’ original desk (which was also used in Hughes biopic “The Aviator”) and a chair from 1934’s “Cleopatra” are just some of the treasures on the block, in addition to replicas of the Hollywood sign, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.

The largest prop auction in Hollywood history will take place onsite and online today through Saturday, with less unique pieces to be sold online Aug. 3-10.
