Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Communications
Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
What: Opened by Dubai ruler Sheik Mohammed in partnership with USC’s Annenberg School of Communication, the school is aiming to become the first port of call for a new generation of Arab writers across print, radio, TV and new media, as well as visual fictional storytelling.

Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts
Location: Aqaba, Jordan
What: The Middle East’s first full-fledged film school is a partnership between USC and the government of Jordan. Based in Jordan’s seaside resort of Aqaba, the school offers a comprehensive set of graduate courses for students across the region.

The Circle
Location: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
What: The three-day film financing confab, which takes place during Abu Dhabi’s Middle East Intl. Film Festival in October, is enjoying success with its $100,000 screenwriting competish, the Shasha Grant. This year’s winner gets a first-look deal with Abu Dhabi’s production shingle Imagenation.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival
Location: Doha, Qatar
What: Execs at the inaugural fest are putting as much emphasis on educational outreach as they are on their program and red carpet lineup. Fest organizers are working hard to maintain a year-round schedule of film workshops and educational opportunities for local aspiring filmmakers, as well as commissioning for the fest’s website mini master classes on filmmaking techniques for aspiring local filmmakers.

Dubai Intl. Film Festival
Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
What: The fest has been increasing its industry and training programs for Middle Eastern filmmakers ever since it launched the co-production market Dubai Film Connection three years ago. New fest initiative, the Exchange, will offer aspiring filmmakers courses in producing, screenwriting and journalism.
