Warner Bros. sequel holds on to #1 spot

Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” stayed at No. 1 internationally over the July 31-Aug. 2 weekend, while the No. 2 spot saw a close battle between a pair of 3-D toons.

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” grossed $24.7 million from 8,844 runs in 68 territories for a boffo cume of $551.4 million, making it the top-grossing animated title of all time at the foreign B.O. Disney/Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” was the previous record-holder at $524.9 million.

Performances of “Ice Age 3” and “Up” provide further evidence of 3-D’s ability to boost the bottom line through the additional charge for a 3-D ticket.

“Ice Age 3” narrowly won the No. 2 spot over Disney/Pixar’s “Up,” which grossed $23.4 million from 2,109 runs in 23 markets. Toon’s foreign cume is $79.8 million, even though it is still early in its run.

In its first major push, “Up” saw uplifting launches in France and Spain.

“Up” grossed a massive $8.9 million from 718 runs in Gaul, where it opened the Cannes Film Festival in May, becoming the first animated title to ever do so.

Results in Spain were equally impressive. “Up” performed in line with buoyant predictions, grossing $7.9 million from 602 prints. In Spain, there were only 161 3-D runs, but they yielded $3.3 million for a print average of $19,110.

Or this: “Up’s” opening weekend grosses in a number of territories were close to, or exceeded, the entire stint of Pixar’s 2008 summer tentpole “Wall-E.” That includes Russia, where “Up” opened to $12 million. “Wall-E” cumed $11.7 million in that territory.

It’s too early to tell how whether Disney’s second 3-D toon “G-Force” will fare internationally. It grossed $11.3 million in its soph sesh for a foreign cume of $12.6 million.

“Ice Age 3” isn’t the only surprise over performer at the summer B.O. Other titles in that category include Disney’s romantic comedy “The Proposal” and Warner Bros.’ “The Hangover.” American comedies don’t always do big business overseas, but “Hangover” and “Proposal” have bucked that trend.

Over the weekend, “Proposal,” which Disney is releasing more slowly overseas, grossed $11.7 million from 2,692 playdates for a cume of $82.5 million in its seventh week.

“Hangover” grossed $8.9 million from 2,233 runs for a foreign cume of $113 million in its ninth week. Worldwide tally is a boffo $368.9 million.

Universal’s Johnny Depp gangster pic “Public Enemies” continues to generate interest, grossing $9.7 million from 2,900 playdates in 42 territories over the weekend. Foreign cume is $50.4 million; worldwide tally is $144.3 million.

CJ Entertainment’s blockbuster Korean film “Haeundae” grossed $9.3 million from 881 runs for a cume of $29.7 million in its second sesh. The disaster pic cost a sizeable $13 million to produce, but already appears to be on solid financial standing.

Actioner “Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” grossed $8.3 million for the frame, bringing its foreign cume to $19 million. Pic’s worldwide tally is $83.5 million.

Placing No. 10 for the frame was Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno,” which grossed $4 million from 2,500 runs in 33 territories for a foreign cume of $66 million and worldwide total of $125 million.
