Film Society taps Foundas for director post

Critic will head up N.Y. Film Fest's event programs

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has tapped LA Weekly film editor and chief film critic Scott Foundas as associate program director.

Foundas, who reviewed hundreds of films for Variety between 2000 and 2005, will begin in his new post at the start of the year with responsibilities for series and event programs including the New York Film Festival.

“Scott’s writing is an exhilarating dialogue with artists and audiences alike,” said exec director Mara Manus. “It is this vibrancy, along with Scott’s deep film knowledge, that will contribute greatly to our growing organization, ensuring we continue to offer (audiences) a vital place of serious film culture.”

Foundas will be working with program director Richard Pena, a 22 year veteran of the Film Society. He told Daily Variety that he’s planning to continue offering the center’s programming combo of repertory and new films in order to spotlight new trends — such as a recent program at the Vienna Film Festival spotlighting Filipino director Lino Brocka (“Jaguar”).

“There are always discoveries to be made and I’ve always been intrigued by programs that are outside the box,” he added. “You find that filmmakers in 1942 and 2009 are often talking about the same thing.”

Foundas plans to move to New York. Since 2007, he’s been a member of the selection committee for the New York Film Festival.
