Even though he died two years ago, the specter of Ingmar Bergman still looms over the Scandinavian film industry.
At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the feature-length documentary “Pictures From the Playhouse,” helmed by Stig Bjorkman, will have its world premiere. It was pieced together with excerpts from nine behind-the-scenes docus shot over the course of nine Bergman productions, from “Sawdust and Tinsel” up to “Persona.”
New interviews have been conducted with Bergman regulars Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson. And Martin Scorsese, whose World Cinema Foundation helped fund the film, has contributed an introduction.
The nine behind-the-scenes films are part of the collection that Bergman donated to the Ingmar Bergman Foundation in 2002.
