Film is second biggest Hollywood opener ever
Roland Emmerich’s “2012” scored the second biggest opening weekend B.O. ever for a Hollywood pic in India, Sony Pictures India has revealed.
Pic grossed Rupees 191.5 million ($4.113 million) after it opened Nov. 13 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu language versions with 676 prints on 715 screens.
The highest opening gross of any Hollywood film in India is “Spider-Man 3,” which opened with $4.117 million in 2007. Pic went on to gross $14.25 million in India, beating the $13.87 million gross for “Titanic.”
Sony’s “Quantum of Solace” is the third biggest with $3.6 million in 2008.
Sony Pictures India managing director Kercy Daruwala said: “The film looks unbeatable for the coming weeks in the wake of sustained marketing and strong word-of-mouth. “Audiences are accepting that the breathtaking special effects can be enjoyed best in theaters.
“We expect the audiences who were not able to watch it due to full houses at the weekend to come in now.”
“2012” faces competition from hit holdover “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” and Friday’s release, terrorism-themed “Kurbaan,” featuring real-life couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
