U.K., Australia nab Digital Emmys

'Scorched,' 'Battlefront' among winners

CANNES — Australia’s “Scorched,” the U.K.’s “Battlefront” and “Britain From Above” won the three Intl. Digital Emmy Awards given out at Mip TV on Monday.

“Scorched,” produced by Firelight, took the fiction nod. The interactive online drama is set in 2012 in a world ravaged by an environmental crisis that leaves 2 million Australians without water.

“It took us five years to put this together,” said “Scorched” producer and helmer Marcus Gillezeau. “There was no financing structure in Australia for new media projects like ours.”

Gillezeau hopes the award will encourage emerging filmmakers to explore new media.

“Britain From Above,” produced by the BBC and Lion Television, received the non-fiction award. Conceived as a TV program with an interactive online companion, the project gives audiences unusual views of the U.K. and the world from above.

Lion Television interactive head Kristy Hunter said the website is now part of the curriculum for high school students in the U.K. “Every 14-year-old is using clips from the website to learn about geography,” said Hunter.

“Battlefront,” produced by Raw TV and Airlock for pubcaster Channel 4, won the nod in the children and young people’s category.

A chronicle of 20 teens campaigning to change the world, the project includes blogs, video diaries and short films that compliment the TV series.
