Oscar Wilde Awards Honoree
If the Oscars break a certain way, the two women who take home acting statuettes will breathlessly thank the same person — Hylda Queally.
That’s because Queally — CAA’s Ireland-born superagent — represents Kate Winslet (“The Reader”) and Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”), nominees in the actress and supporting actress categories, respectively.
Known for her long-term relationships with clients, Queally has been Winslet’s rep since the British actress was a teenager.
“I saw her in ‘Heavenly Creatures’ and was blown away,” says Queally. “So I got on a plane to England, took this 16-year-old girl from Reading to lunch and said, ‘I have to represent you.’ It’s worked out very well.”
Despite her love for the business, Queally — a mother of three who reads 10 scripts a week after tucking her children into bed — says she never wanted to be an actress.
“For me, the thrill is in finding a great piece of material for a client,” says Queally, “and then going after it, hard.”
