Screenwriter draws big talent to small-budget pic

Origins:“It started with the screenwriter Nick Hornby who read the original short memoir in the British publication Granta.…We found it universal….We talked about the type of writers who could adapt and Nick got possessive, saying that he’d have a go at the material himself. Finola and I together optioned the story,” says Posey.

Funding: “BBC was our cornerstone financier, leaving theatrical for us to sell and taking TV. It was a low enough budget L4.5 million,” says Dwyer, “We brought Endgame Entertainment on board late in the process, which creatively made it possible for us to shoot the film in London.”

High Hurdles: “Biggest challenge in mounting the film was not letting a small budget get in the way of making a great film,” says Dwyer.

Domino effect: “Nick is a magnet for talent, as his work is loved and respected. Peter Sarsgaard was the first to come aboard, then Emma Thompson,” says Dwyer. “We always knew that the film hinged on this central performance of the character Jenny,” adds Posey, “We were so lucky to find Carey (Mulligan)…She was always in the mix and came to our attention through our casting director.”

Setting the record straight: “Everyone thinks we (the producers) make all the money!” jokes Posey. “The biggest misconception is that producers only take care of financing. Good producers are also creative and wear both hats,” adds Dwyer.
