Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award
Scott Berger says he wasn’t destined to go into showbiz. His father was a cab driver, his mother a teacher’s aid. But when the NYU pre-med major took his first course in TV production, he was hooked. Now the boy from Brooklyn is being honored for his work as assistant secretary-treasurer for the DGA and associate director on the “CBS Evening News With Katie Couric.” “I’m 48 years old, and this should entitle me somehow to retire,” Berger jokes. He describes the whole affair as somewhat surreal, especially given both he and fellow honoree William Brady are “CBS News” cohorts. “It makes it that much more special,” he says, “that we’re experiencing this together.”
