Canada’s Junos honor Nickelback

Rockers win big on second night of kudos

Vancouver rockers Nickelback felt the hometown love at Sunday’s Juno Awards, nabbing best album, best group and fan choice trophies for their multi-platinum 2008 album “Dark Horse.”

Canada’s top music honors were handed out at a star-studded live stadium show in Vancouver’s General Motors Place, hosted by comedian Russell Peters and broadcast nationally on CTV.

Seven awards were presented, capping off a four-day music celebration that included an industry gala dinner during which 32 Junos were presented.

Two of those winners hit the podium on Sunday — Kardinal Offishall, for best rap recording, and Sam Roberts, for artist of the year.

Indie popster Lights picked up new artist of the year, while Alexisonfire guitarist and singer Dallas Green won top songwriter.

Performers included show-openers Nickelback, Bryan Adams, double Juno winners The Stills and pop songstress Sarah McLachlan, who was honored with the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award.

Veteran producer Bob Rock inducted ‘80s rockers Loverboy (“Everybody’s Working for the Weekend”) into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Notable Juno-winners from Saturday’s event included Serena Ryder (adult alternative album), Alanis Morissette (pop album), alternative popsters Barenaked Ladies (children’s album), Divine Brown (R&B recording) and veteran folk artist Buffy Sainte-Marie (aboriginal album).

A list of the 39 Juno Awards winners can be found at www.junoawards.ca.
