DVD sales fell 11% in Japan in ’08

Top earners were local cartoons

TOKYO — Video sales in Japan, primarily of DVDs, shrank 11.1% to 286 billion yen ($2.9 billion) in 2008, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Japan Video Assn.

The value of DVD sales fell 13.1% to $2.8 billion, the first time in five years this figure has fallen below $3 billion. Of this amount, sell-through accounted for 63.6%, rental 35.9%.

Breaking down sales by categories, the top earners were Japanese toons, accounting for 27% of sales, followed by Japanese music (17.3%) and foreign pics (14.1%), not including Asian films.

Among rentals, the top earners were foreign pics, including Asian movies, accounting for 27.9% of sales, followed by foreign drama, including Asian dramas (26.1%), and Japanese toons (18.2%).
