Thesp to unveil new website at Comic-Con
At a Comic-Con panel this Friday, Danny DeVito will unveil his website Thebloodfactory.com, which will offer a series of short horror films. The website, which launches with five shorts, is a partnership with writer John Albo. “John writes the films, I’ve shot about 15 of them, and we’ve got 50 in the hopper,” DeVito said. “Most of the movies are moral tales of revenge, people getting their comeuppance, and some are just barefaced provocative shockers. We call them ‘splatter cuts,’ these four-to-six minute Grand Guignol, bloody, over-the-top Mario Bava type of movies.” The pair is testing the economic model of short films on websites by not selling advertising, with hopes that the gory offerings will coagulate into a venture that will pay for itself. “There could be a business in this,” DeVito said. “We’re doing graphic novels of each of the films, and the plan in the long run is to offer them to people in every service you can get away with, cell phones, computers, DVDs. “We might make feature films out of some of the material. We’ll grow this and figure out where it’s going, but right now, we’re just having a good time.” A teaser trailer has already been released to the Web. “That trailer was meant to be a calling card, reminiscent of ‘Bambi Meets Godzilla,’ ” DeVito said. While DeVito has displayed a dark creative side in past comedies like “The War of the Roses” and “Throw Mama From the Train,” the shorts are much darker. This is squarely an R-rated undertaking not for the faint of heart. There is plenty of blood, hacking of flesh, incest, even some incestuous cannibalism. DeVito said he’s just getting warmed up. DeVito has cast the shorts with friends and longtime collaborators like Tracey Walter and Carol Kane. The venture began as a creative lark and a way to work with friends, when DeVito had time between shooting features and episodes of the FX series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Click here for Variety‘s complete Comic-Con coverage.
