Duo honored for their animated films

BOSTON — The Quay Brothers — American-born, London-based animators known for their unusual animated films — are the 2009 recipients of the Coolidge Award.

Twin brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay will attend two days of ceremonies and programs at the Coolidge Corner Theater May 6-7.

The Coolidge instituted the award in 2004 to honor world-class filmmakers and has made a point to spotlight a different segment of the industry each year. Past recipients include director Zhang Yimou, d.p. Vittorio Storaro, actress Meryl Streep, editor Thelma Schoonmaker and producer Jeremy Thomas.

The two-day event will include an awards ceremony, screening of films by the Quays, a press conference and opportunities to interact with the public. Their films include “Street of Crocodiles” and the live-action “Institute Benjamenta.” The award coincides with the indie theater’s celebration of its 75th anniversary.
