Sheila E. will testify on Tuesday on behalf of performers at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on a bill to require that radio stations pay artists and musicians when their songs are played on the airwaves.
The singer is among a contigent of performers who have taken prominent roles in pushing for the legislation, including Sheryl Crow, Will.i.am, Tony Bennett and Dionne Warwick. Billy Corgan testified at a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in the spring. The committee passed a bill in a 21-9 vote in May, although it is uncertain when it will reach the floor.
Broadcasters have mounted an extensive lobbying effort to defeat the bill, and say that it will further harm an already ailing broadcast radio business.
