WARSAW — Pubcaster Polish TV (TVP) is bowing a digital platform, which will carry its free-to-air channels and, from December, nine pay channels.
TVP acting prexy Piotr Farfal said the platform aimed to offer 20 channels on subscription.
“Our offer is directed at viewers who will be satisfied with 23 channels and another 20 at low fees,” said Farfal. “As a public broadcaster we are not in direct competition with commercial platforms, so we will not compete for a viewer demanding 200 channels.”
TVP enters a tough market. There are three commercial digital platforms already available in Poland and rumors that Polish Telecom will announce its own digital platform in October.
Market leader Cyfrowy Polsat has 2.8 million subscribers, Cyfra Plus has 1.3 million, while N has 500,000.
Farfal estimates that TVP’s platform could attract as many as 900,000 subs by 2010, a number deemed optimistic by some analysts.
