South Korea sends ‘Mother’ to Oscar

Mystery thriller directed by 'Host' helmer Bong Joon-ho

SEOUL — “The Host” helmer Bong Joon-ho’s mystery thriller “Mother” is South Korea’s choice for consideration in the Oscar foreign-language film category.

Kim Hye-ja plays a mother trying to prove that her mentally challenged son (Won Bin) did not murder a high school girl.

Pic, which was selected by the Korean Film Council, world preemed in Cannes and is due to screen at next month’s Toronto Film Festival.

The closing date for submissions to the foreign-language category is Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced Feb. 2, and the Academy Awards take place March 7.
