Viewers no longer have access to broadcaster

MILAN — Sky Italia viewers will no longer have access to RAI via their satellite box after the pubcaster turned down Sky’s offer of €600 million ($855.3 million) to remain on the platform for seven years.

The Italo pay TV arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. empire had offered RAI the money to broadcast its digital channels, including RAI Extra and RAI Cinema as well as terrestrial channels RAI1, RAI2 and RAI3.

Sky Italia has announced 10 new channels to replace the RAI offering.

“Sky Italia clearly thinks it has a weakness in its programming, otherwise it wouldn’t have offered RAI so much in the first place,” said TV analyst Alessandro Bai Badino of Deutsche Bank.
