Spanish channel nabs rights for animated specials

Spanish broadcaster Antena 3 has inked with Paramount Pictures for DreamWorks Animation TV holiday specials based on blockbuster features “Monsters vs. Aliens” and “Madagascar.”

“Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space” will air during Halloween and “Merry Madagascar” is scheduled for Christmas. Both half-hour specials will broadcast in primetime.

DeAPlaneta-owned A3 hopes to repeat the success it achieved in 2007 with another DreamWorks’ TV special, “Shrek the Halls.”

Broadcast Dec. 25, “Halls” took a 37.3 share and 6.9 million viewers, becoming the top-rated nonsports show in Spain for the year.

In the U.S., NBC will broadcast “Mutant Pumpkins” Oct. 28 and “Merry Madagascar” Nov. 17.

In “Pumpkins,” Reese Witherspoon voices Susan Murphy, the young woman hit by a meteorite in “Monsters.” “Merry Madagascar” adds Carl Reiner’s voice to its cast.

“Mutant Pumpkins” is produced by Latifa Ouaou, helmed by Peter Ramsey and written by Adam F. Goldberg.

“Merry Madagascar” is directed by David Soren, exec produced by Mireille Soria and produced by Joe Aguilar.
