Carrera's pic enters foreign-language race

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose Carlos Carrera’s “Backyard” (El traspatio) Wednesday as the country’s entry in the Oscars’ foreign-language film race.

Pic stars Ana de la Reguera (“Ladies’ Night”) and focuses on the probe into the murder of women in the city of Juarez on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Carrera is known for helming 2002 Gael Garcia Bernal starrer “The Crime of Father Amaro,” Mexico’s all-time top grosser domestically.

“Backyard” is being distributed in Mexico through Paramount and recently screened at the Toronto Film Festival.

The Mexican Academy also named Rodrigo Pla’s “Desierto adentro” as the country’s representative at Spain’s Goya Awards.

The closing date for submissions to the foreign-language category is Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced Feb. 2, and the Academy Awards take place on March 7.
