Mexican comedy to bow Aug. 21

Maya Entertainment has acquired U.S. theatrical and home entertainment rights to Mexican comedy “Casi divas.”

The distrib will release the pic in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Diego on Aug. 21, with a national expansion to follow.

“Casi divas,” written and directed by Issa Lopez, centers on four young women from different corners of Mexico who get caught up in the frenzy during a talent search for a lead role in a movie.

Pic was produced by Columbia Pictures Producciones Mexico, the local production arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and grossed $3 million in Mexico. It stars Maya Zapata, Ana Layevska, Patricia Llaca, Daniela Schmidt and Julio Bracho.
