Pic screens at Toronto Film Festival

BERLIN — New York-based Kino Intl. has acquired U.S. rights to upcoming Toronto screener “Ajami.”

The Israeli drama, by Arab-Jewish director-duo Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, examines life in the Jaffa neighborhood of Ajami, a bustling melting pot of cultures and conflicting views among Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Pic premiered in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, where it earned a special mention by the Camera d’Or jury, and unspools in Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section.

The Israeli-German co-production was produced by Mosh Danon of Tel Aviv-based Inosan Productions and Thanassis Karathanos of Twenty Twenty Vision in Berlin.

Handled internationally by Cologne-based Match Factory, “Ajami” has already sold to the U.K., France, Spain, Greece and Benelux.
