Film opens Tokyo's Latin Beat Film Festival

MADRID — Only Hearts has acquired Japanese rights to Mexican B.O. smash hit and Academy Award contender “Arrancame la vida” (Tear This Heart Out), which opens Japan’s Latin Beat Film Festival in Tokyo this Thursday.

The deal comes in one of the world’s toughest movie markets. It adds to a bevy of licensing pacts for “Heart,” which Lionsgate has acquired for North America in a deal announced last month.

Company’s sales agent, FilmSharks Intl., has also closed deals for Spain (Wanda), Australia (SBS), India (CA) and Taiwan (Swallow Wings).

Written and directed by Roberto Sneider (“Frida”), “Heart,” a romantic meller set in post-Revolution ’30s and ’40s Mexico, made the semi-final nine-film cut this year for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ foreign-language award.

Distribbed in Latin America by Fox, it has notched up 2.6 million admissions to date in the region.
