Duo to open theater in Taiwan

HONG KONG – Taiwan exhibition group Vie Show Cinemas has struck a deal with Canada’s IMAX Corp. to open an Imax digital theater in its Sun Cinemas complex in Taipei.

Screen will open later this quarter in order to capitalize on a growing slate of event movies that are available in the large-screen format. It will be capable of running 2-D and 3-D pics.

“The economics of IMAX’s digital projection system, combined with the increase in Hollywood content being released in IMAX’s format, made the decision to get into the IMAX business easy. We’re very excited to install the system during the first quarter, with the goal of offering our customers most of this year’s strong IMAX film slate,” Charles Wang, chairman of VieShow, said.

VieShow Cinemas is the current market leader in Taiwanese exhibition industry, with seven locations island-wide, and an estimated 35% box office share.
