104 films to screen in South Korea

BERLIN — European Film Promotion will take a record-breaking 104 European films to the Pusan Film Festival in South Korea next month, the Hamburg-based agency said on Tuesday.

The films make up almost a third of the fest’s 355-pic program, which is up on last year’s 315 pics.

EFP will take a delegation of 26 helmers and thesps from 15 countries to present their pics to the fest, running Oct. 8-16, which has become an important gateway for European productions into Asia.

Although Asia has never been an easy market for Euro films because of the strong Hollywood presence in many territories and the strength of homegrown films, there is nevertheless a growing interest in European films, EFP says.

Directors Costa-Gavras and Jean-Jacques Beineix along with thesp Tildon Swinton will be at the fest, EFP said.

EFP, backed by the European Union’s Media program, will be in Pusan for the 12th year.

It will have an umbrella office for European sales at the Asian Film Market, hosting 27 companies from 15 countries. It will also host the traditional European Industry Cocktail.

For the first time this year, EFP will make film sales support available. A list of the pics being supported will be announced on Oct. 5.
