Diego Luna set to helm ‘Abel’

Actor to make feature directorial debut

MEXICO CITY — Thesp Diego Luna will make his feature directorial debut with family drama “Abel.”

Pic is produced by Canana Films, which Luna started with Gael Garcia Bernal and producer Pablo Cruz, and co-produced by John Malkovich’s Mr. Mudd banner.

Drama is told from child’s perspective and stars Mexican thesp Jose Maria Yazpik who appeared with Luna in last year’s “Just Walking.”

“Abel’s” budget of 35 million pesos ($2.73 million) taps private coin and federal film incentives and includes $780,000 in cash from the central Mexican state of Aguascalientes, which is also providing an extra $370,000 worth of additional services.

Pic is already lensing under d.p. Patrick Murguia in Aguascalientes and Mexico City’s Churubusco Studios.

Luna appeared in last year’s Mexican stage production of Zach Helm’s “The Good Canary,” which Malkovich directed.
