Venezuelan President heads to Lido

VENICE — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez walked down the Venice Film Festival red carpet Monday amid massive security provided by Italo police and paramilitary Carabinieri agents, marking the first time a head of state has come to the Lido to tubthump a movie about himself.

The Oliver Stone-helmed documentary “South of the Border,” in which the director toured South America to canvass opinions from the region’s other political leaders about the controversial Chavez, had its preem here Monday afternoon.

The president looked to be enjoying himself on the red carpet, at one point pulling out a camera to take photos of the paparazzi as their flashbulbs popped.
