‘Chaser’s’ back after dying kid joke

Australian comedy was yanked off the air

SYDNEY — An Australian comedy sketch show pulled off the air for two weeks after it made fun of dying children is set to return to screens June 24.

Pubcaster the Australian Broadcasting Co. has demoted its head of comedy, Amanda Duthie, after she allowed the Make a Realistic Wish sketch to run in “The Chaser’s War on Everything.”

Portraying sick kids and their families as opportunists, it was widely condemned the day after its June 3 broadcast. The item was yanked from repeat broadcasts and the pubcaster halted the popular show pending an internal probe into the matter.

ABC topper Mark Scott stripped Duthie of her responsibility for comedy June 10. However, she retains control over the arts and entertainment portfolios.

The series is produced by independent production company Chaser Broadcasting and the ABC.
