Broadway eyes Mamet’s ‘Oleanna’

Play is likely to join 'Race' on fall slate

Broadway looks poised to get a double dose of David Mamet this fall, with a transfer of the scribe’s “Oleanna” likely to join a fall sked that also includes the playwright’s new play “Race.”

Doug Hughes-helmed staging of “Oleanna,” starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles, opened Sunday at L.A. Center Theater Group’s Mark Taper Forum to enthusiastic reviews.

Project, developed over the last several months by producer Jeffrey Finn (“On Golden Pond,” “Blithe Spirit”), has been on the radar of Gotham legiters for a while now, but the good press is said to have prompted more concrete planning for a New York berth.

A rep for the show wouldn’t confirm a Broadway engagement, and no timeline has been set.

Plotline of “Oleanna,” which preemed in Boston in 1992 before going on to an Off Broadway run later that year, centers on two battle-of-the-sexes confrontations between a college professor (Pullman) and his student (Stiles).

Stiles first appeared in “Oleanna” opposite Aaron Eckhart in a separate 2004 production directed by Lindsay Posner. Actress talked up her attachment to the current staging last fall.

If “Oleanna” does materialize on Broadway, it would rep Stiles’ Rialto debut and Pullman’s first Main Stem stint since “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?” in 2002. Show would join a season that already includes the world preem of Mamet’s new play “Race,” opening in December at the Ethel Barrymore Theater.

CTG production of “Oleanna” runs through July 12.
