Bollywood star to be directed by Farah Khan
After making two hit films with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, choreographer turned director Farah Khan has announced her next film, “Tees Maar Khan,” will star another massive box-office draw, Akshay Kumar.
The laffer will be a co-production between Khan and her writer-director-producer husband Shirish Kunder’s newly launched shingle Three’s Company and Kumar’s Hari Om Prodns.
Announcing the film in Mumbai Thursday, Khan said, “Akshay suits the role in ‘Tees Mar Khan’ perfectly as Shirish wrote it with him in mind. It will be a pleasure to be working with him. He comes under the bracket of the top three actors in the industry.”
The title of the pic literally translates as “Slayer of 30” and is derived from an Indian legend in which a village tailor killed 30 flies and proclaimed himself “the man who vanquished 30.”
Kumar said, “ ‘Tees Maar Khan’ is going to be a special film because it has the best of both worlds. Farah’s talent as a director and Shirish’s story-telling ability.”
The film was initially supposed to have been directed by Kunder, who made his directorial debut with “Jaan-E-Mann” in 2006, starring Kumar and Salman Khan.
Kunder said, “When Farah and I formed our production company, we mutually thought it is best that she directs this film while I take the responsibility of a producer. I shared a great rapport with Akshay while working on ‘Jaan-e-mann,’ and I have been looking forward to work with him again.”
Farah Khan’s first two films were for actor Shah Rukh Khan’s production company Red Chillies Ent.: 2004 pic “Main Hoon Naa” netted $15.4 million worldwide, while “Om Shanti Om” in 2007 collected $25 million.
