MADRID — Yasushi Akimoto, the creator of Japanese girl group and pop phenomenon AKB48, will explain the reality show business model at a conference Oct. 6 during the 25th Mipcom trade fair.
AKB48 will also perform at Mipcom’s opening night cocktail Oct. 5 at the Majestic Hotel. And Japanese fiction will be highlighted during the Fresh TV session delivered by French TV trend analysis company The Wit on Tuesday Oct. 6.
Created by J-Pop songwriter and TV format producer Akimoto in 2005, and made up of three teams of girls, AKB48 plays off a key live entertainment factor, performing everyday at Tokyo’s Akihabara AKB Theater. That allows fans to go meet their idols.
The group also has a TV show, “Akbingo!”
Japanese exhibitors at Mipcom will include NHK, Fuji TV, TV Asahi, Dentsu, Geneon Animation, TV Tokyo, Kodansha, Nippon Television Network and Toei Animation.
The 25th Mipcom runs Oct. 5-9 in Cannes. Reed Midem is owned by Variety parent Reed Elsevier.
