Toronto adds to Special Presentations

Almodovar, Solondz films among additions

TORONTO — The North American preems of Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces,” Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet” (both Sony Pictures Classics films) and Todd Solondz’s “Life During Wartime” are among eight special presentations announced Thursday by the Toronto Film Festival, which also unveiled nine Vanguard offerings and the 21-title Discovery slate for the fest’s upcoming edition.

Rounding out special presentations are the world preems of Renato De Maria’s fugitive tale “Front Line,” Stephen Poliakoff’s WWII thriller “Glorious 39” and Yoichi Sai’s ninja epic “Kamui,” the international preem of Juan Jose Campanella’s “The Secret of Their Eyes” and the Canuck preem of Lone Scherfig’s London-set coming-of-ager “An Education.”

Discovery’s world preems include Norwegian docu vet Margreth Olin’s fiction bow “The Angel,” J. Blakeson’s kidnap thriller “The Disappearance of Alice Creed,” Leon Prudovsky’s romance “Five Hours From Paris,” Ahmad Abdalla’s Cairo-set artpic “Heliopolis,” cinematographer Philippe van Leeuw’s helming debut “Le Jour ou dieu est parti en voyage,” Rigoberto Perezcano’s border tale “Northless” and Josh Crook’s political pic “La Soga.”

Thesp Samantha Morton’s feature-helming bow “The Unloved,” Satoko Yokohama’s surreal black comedy “Bare Essence of Life,” Rachel Ward’s family drama “Beautiful Kate,” Susanne Schneider’s family intrigue “The Day Will Come,” Glendyn Ivin’s father-son wilderness tale “Last Ride,” Granaz Moussavi’s underground saga “My Tehran for Sale,” Koji Yakusho’s drama of loss “Toad’s Oil” and Matias Armand Jordal’s family drama “Together” receive their international preems in Discovery.

The program’s North American preems include Paul and Sandra Fierlinger’s animated “My Dog Tulip,” Martin Pieter Zandvliet’s “Applause,” Ounie Lecomte’s “A Brand New Life,” Margaret Corkery’s “Eamon,” Dima El-Horr’s “Every Day Is a Holiday” and Oliver Hermanus’ “Shirley Adams.”

Vanguard adds the world preems of Paul King’s “Bunny and the Bull,” Luis Ortega’s survivor saga “The Dirty Saints,” Jesper Ganslandt’s suspense drama “The Ape” and Dorothee van den Berghe’s Amsterdam hippie drama “My Queen Karo.”

The program’s remaining titles, all North American preems, include Gaspar Noe’s “Enter the Void,” Pou-Soi Cheang’s “Accident,” Valery Todorovsky’s “Hipsters,” Felix Van Groeningen’s “The Misfortunates” and Lou Ye’s “Spring Fever.”

The Toronto Film Festival runs Sept. 10-19.
