Tim Streaty

Wounded Marine Careers Foundation: Director, Training Center

For veterans overcoming life-altering injuries, mastering a new skill can seem impossible. That’s where retired Gunnery Sgt. Tim Streaty comes in. Drawing on his 16 years of broadcast experience for the military, Streaty teaches disabled soldiers how to use Final Cut Pro editing software and earn their certification.

“When you go through something as hard as an IED explosion and your body and mind are traumatized, during the healing process you lack confidence that you can learn new things,” he explains. “My students’ success is measured in knowing they can learn a new trade even though they went through really bad times.”

Between 12 and 20 wounded vets are admitted to the 14-week course, located on an 18-acre studio lot in San Diego. The org teaches all aspects of media arts, including cinematography, grip work, post-production and sound, then helps place grads in industry jobs. According to Streaty, “The atmosphere at the foundation is (based) on one of the Marine Corps’ tenets: Adapt and overcome” — useful advice for surviving Hollywood as well.
