Campanella pic goes for six-figure sum
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American rights to helmer Juan Jose Campanella’s arthouse standout “El secreto de sus ojos” (The Secret in Their Eyes). The six-figure deal was inked by Traction Media and Massimo Saidel at Madrid-based sales consortium Latido Films, which is selling the film worldwide outside Spain and Argentina. SPC looks set to bow the pic, which is Argentina’s entry in the foreign-language Oscar category, after the March 7 ceremony, Saidel said. ” ‘Secret’s’ acquisition by one of the U.S.’ blue-chip specialty labels confirms its status as one of this year’s outstanding art films from the Spanish-speaking world,” said the film’s producer Mariela Besuievsky. “The U.S. pickup will be extremely important for the career of the film around the world.” SPC also distributed Campanella’s “The Son of the Bride,” starring Argentine star and Campanella regular Ricardo Darin. A multi-layered noirish romantic drama, “Secret” toplines Darin, this time as a just-retired criminal court official remembering back to the rape and murder of a young woman in Argentina in 1974. Pic has been a huge B.O hit in Argentina, pulling more than 2.3 million admissions at the local B.O., one of the biggest trawls for an Argentine film in recent decades. In Spain, it has proved a crossover breakout, cuming $6.6 million after seven weeks in theaters, and still counting. Pic has garnered rave reviews in both countries. According to Saidel, Latido is in advanced talks with Wild Bunch for a Benelux deal on “Secret” which has closed nearly all main European territories except Germany and Italy. “Secret” is produced by Spain’s Tornasol Films, Campanella’s 100 Bares Prods. and Buenos Aires-based shingle Haddock Films.
