Skip City unveils digital lineup

Japanese festival features 48 films

TOKYO — Skip City International D-Cinema Festival has announced its lineup for its 2009 edition, skedded to unspool July 10-20 in Kawaguchi, a Tokyo satellite city. The fest is the first in the world to specialize in d-cinema.

A total of 48 pics will screen, including 15 in the feature competition section, in which helmers with less than three feature credits vie for the Grand Prize, worth $64,000. Three Japanese films are entered in the section, while the jury will be chaired by veteran producer Mataichiro Yamamoto, whose credits include Paul Schrader’s 1985 drama “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” and the 2007 Takashi Miike smash “Crows Zero.”

There is also a competition section for Japanese d-cinema shorts, with 11 entries selected from 281 submissions.

One highlight is a screening of a new print of the 1951 Akira Kurosawa classic “Rashomon,” digitally restored with the assistance of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and presented with 4K digital projection.

Another big name on the program is Yoji Yamada, the helmer of the Oscar-nommed “Twilight Samurai,” whose two feature-length Kabuki performance pics, produced by Shochiku, will unspool in special screenings.

Among the other events is a contents market on July 12, during which five young filmmakers will have a chance to pitch their d-cinema projects to interested producers.
