Netherlands enter van de Velde drama
Helmer Jean van de Velde’s “The Silent Army” will be the Netherlands’ contender for consideration in Oscar’s foreign-language category, according to government agency Holland Film.
Multilingual pic tells the story of Eduard (played by Dutch pop star Marco Borsato), a cook working in Africa hunting for a boy recruited as a child soldier.
Produced by the Entertainment Group Films, the movie was released locally in December as “Wit licht.” It was later substantially re-edited and, as “The Silent Army,” was selected by the Cannes Film Festival to play in Un Certain Regard.
The closing date for submissions to the foreign-language category is Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced Feb. 2. The Academy Awards take place March 7.
