Film Festival kicks off on Oct. 29
The Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image is upping the amount of competition prize money and introducing documentary section Real Reel for this year’s edition of the Mumbai Film Festival, which kicks off Oct. 29 in India.
The international competition for debut directors includes a $100,000 top prize, $50,000 each for the jury prizes plus a $20,000 aud nod.
The other fest sections are world cinema, Indian showcase, Dimensions Mumbai and the Above the Cut sidebar. Fest includes retrospectives of the work of Paul Schrader, who sits on the jury; Greek helmer Theo Angelopoulos; and Bollywood thesp Shashi Kapoor. Angelopoulos and Kapoor will receive lifetime achievement awards.
Among pics playing are “Moscow, Belgium,” “Rage” and “Man on Wire” along with Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s “Janala,” Rituparno Ghosh’s “Abohomaan,” Umesh Kulkarni’s “Vihir,” Renuka Shahane’s “Rita” and Madhupal’s “Thalappavu.”
Fest closes Nov. 5. MAMI is an initiative of Reliance Big Entertainment, with pics selected by showbiz pros.
