‘John Rabe’ goes with Strand in US

Film premiered at Berlin Film Fest this February

Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Florian Gallenberger’s “John Rabe.”

German-French-Chinese co-production is based on the diaries of German exec Rabe, who worked for Siemens in China in the 1930s and offered refuge to his employees and their families during the Nanking Massacre.

Pic stars Ulrich Tukur (“The Lives of Others”), Steve Buscemi and Daniel Bruhl (“Inglourious Basterds”).

Gallenberger won the short film Oscar for 2000’s “Quiero ser.”

Strand co-prexy Jon Gerrans said he’d been pursuing the pic since its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. “Rabe” won four Golden Lolas, Germany’s top film prizes, this year.

Beta Cinema has sold the pic in more than 20 territories. Munich-based Beta was also behind foreign-language film Oscar winners “The Lives of Others” and “The Counterfeiters” and foreign-lingo film Academy Award nominees “Mongol” and “Downfall.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Strand has been an active buyer on the fest/market circuit lately. Distrib’s 2009 releases include another Beta Cinema title, Max Faerberboeck’s “A Woman in Berlin,” as well as Lucrecia Martel’s “The Headless Woman.”

“Rabe” is set for a spring rollout.
