2009 Romanian Oscar entry nabs U.S. distribution
IFC Films has acquired for U.S. distribution “Police, Adjective,” Romania’s entry in the foreign-language film race for the upcoming Oscars. It’s IFC’s second Romanian film pickup out of Cannes this year and follows its pickups of other prize winners (e.g., 2007’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days”) from the country. Written and directed by Corneliu Porumboiu, “Police” concerns an undercover cop who has a crisis of conscience. It bowed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, where it won two prizes. Pic will unspool at Toronto next month and the New York Film Festival in October. IFC also bought Romanian omnibus “Tales From the Golden Age” right before Cannes got under way this year. Porumboiu’s “12:08 East of Bucharest” won Cannes’ Camera d’Or in 2006. IFC acquisitions VP Arianna Bocco negotiated the deal with Pape Boye of Coach 14. Pic will bow on IFC’s theatrical-VOD platform next year.
