Government OK's import of Michael Jackson film
Chinese authorities have given Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” one of the country’s 20 annual foreign movie import slots.
This frees the pic to open day-and-date with the rest of the world Oct. 28, said Li Chow, VP and general manager of Sony Pictures Entertainment in China.
She said Sony Pictures is planning to release 500 prints in 35mm and 1,200 digital copies — a wide release given Jackson’s big fan base in China.
China allows 20 major foreign films to be released every year on a revenue-sharing basis. Its two all-time box office records were both set by U.S. films: In July, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” broke the 11-year-old record set by “Titanic” by earning 400 million yuan ($59 million).
Directed by longtime Jackson collaborator Kenny Ortega, “Michael Jackson: This Is It” draws on hundreds of hours of footage as Jackson prepared for a series of London concerts for which he was rehearsing before his death on June 25.
