Cinema do Brasil, APEX trade agency start program
Brazil’s Cinema do Brasil and Apex, the country’s trade and exports promotion agency, have launched a $150,000 prints-and-advertising fund.
The program, groundbreaking for Latin America, offers foreign distributors $15,000 toward P&A on a new Brazilian release.
Distributors must match money received from the fund and commit to open the movie on at least two prints in five cities or for at least a four-week theatrical run, said Cinema do Brasil (CDB) consultant, Rachel Monteiro.
That money can be quite a deal sweetener, said Frederic Corvez, CEO of U Media, which is selling helmer Esmir Filho’s Brazilian Locarno competition player “The Famous and the Dead.”
“Films such as ‘Famous’ would normally go out on limited release, maybe 15-20 prints, in countries such as France or Spain with something like $110,000 P&A coin,” said Corvez. At that level of commitment, he added, “the CDB support is highly useful.”
