VOD site Voddler bows in Sweden

Company signs deals with Paramount, Disney

STOCKHOLM — Video-on-demand service Voddler launched in Sweden Wednesday, offering a service comparable to Hulu.

Voddler offers the 500,000 customers of Internet service provider Bredbandsbolaget the stream pics from the U.S. majors. Deals have been signed with Paramount and Disney, and, according to CEO Marcus Backlund, a pact with Sony Pictures is imminent. “We believe we will have deals with all the major U.S. studios before the end of the year,” he said.

Older films are free, with the company earning revenue from pre-roll commercials. For newer films, there will be a fee. Users will also be able to stream TV programs and music.

The plan is for Voddler to launch in all Nordic countries by next summer. It also wants to launch in the U.K.

“Our goal is to be a new Swedish world-spanning success,” Backlund said.
