Dubai honors Bachchan

Bollywood idol to receive lifetime achievement award

The Dubai Film Festival will honor Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan with a lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contribution to cinema.

Fest chairman Abdulhamid Juma said, “No one from Indian cinema has made a bigger impact on the world. The award is recognition for an artist whose performances have inspired billions — going well beyond his intended audiences from the sub-continent.”

Bachchan debuted with “Saat Hindustani” in 1969 and has enjoyed a phenomenal run of film success over the last 40 years. Also notable are his TV hosting stints on “Kaun banega crorepati?,” the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?,” and “Bigg Boss,” the Indian version of “Big Brother.”

Bachchan’s next film, “Paa,” will be released Dec. 4. He plays a 13-year-old suffering from a rare disease where children age prematurely and survive only up to their teens.

In the past, Dubai has honored Morgan Freeman, Arab actor Adel Emam and Indian producer-director Yash Chopra.

Fest runs Dec. 9-16.
