‘Northless’ wins Golden Star

Perezcano film wins at Marrakech

Rigoberto Perezcano’s “Northless,” about Mexican immigrants trying to cross the border into the U.S., won the Golden Star for film at the Marrakech Film Festival, which wrapped Saturday.

Pic previously won kudos at San Sebastian and Abu Dhabi.

Best actor went to Cyron Melville for his role as a psychotic pianist in the Danish romantic drama “Love and Rage,” by Morten Giese.

Lotte Verbeek won actress honors for her role in Polish-born helmer Urszula Antoniak’s love story “Nothing personal,” which also won for film at Locarno.

Jury prize was awarded to Moroccan-Belgian director Nabil Ben Yadir’s comedy “Les barons,” about Arab immigrants living in Brussels, and Malaysian director Charlotte Lim Lay Kuen’s family drama “My daughter.”

Fest’s artistic director Bruno Barde brought leading helmers to Marrakech, including Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami as jury president, together with Mike Figgis, Elia Suleiman, Emir Kusturica, Jim Jarmusch, Alfonso Cuaron and Christophe Honore.

“This year we aimed to place the fest under the aegis of top cineastes,” Barde explained. “Lessons about the art of filmmaking should be given by the grand masters.”
