I phoned Theo Bikel today to congratulate him. He had mailed me an announcement that he and pianist-conductor Tamara Brooks were married Nov. 11 by her cousin, Judge Carmen Ciparick, in N.Y. (He had appeared this past Monday at the Mark Taper Forum in the Salon’s sensaysh tribute to Frank Loesser.)
Theo answered my call (on his cell phone) in Paris where, on Mondaym he performs in concert at Gaveneau Hall with an international quartet, then moves on to Vienna for two concerts with Tamara conducting. They return from the (working) honeymoon to Washington where on Dec. 17, he bows his one-man show, “Sholem Aleichem — Laughter, Times, and Tears” with music by Tamara. He tells me Aleichem’s granddaughter, Bel Kaufman (“Up The Down Staircase”), 97, will be on hand. And for Theo’s 85th birthday, June 15, 2009, an all-star program is being assembled to toast him at Carnegie Hall He reeled off a few names who will appear/perform to toast Theo –and it sounds like it will be awesome!
