It was a happy wedding party, but it was before the passage of Proposition 8. Judge Judy officiated and there was a wonderful bond between the wedding couple and many of the guests. Longtime partners Michael Feinstein and Terrence Flannigan were married Oct.17, two weeks before the ban on same sex marriage became California law. Leading the list of those in the wedding party helping the loved-by-the-industry-and-community couple celebrate was Tony Martin — who will be 95 at Christmas. He got a heartfelt applause after singing to the couple. This was his first performance since the death of wife Cyd Charisse. In the past, he had starred twice at Feinstein’s in the Regency. Also tune-toasting the wedding couple was Liza Minnelli, also a star attraction at Feinstein’s, and Florence Henderson who not only starred for Feinstein’s, but who was in the Mediterranean party with the wedding duo on Judge Judy’s and husband Jerry Sheindein’s yacht. And this group was also on hand to toast Henderson at her bow at Feinstein’s, Nov.5 – 9. Also singing warmly to the wedding couple were Stefanie Powers and Debbie Boone.
I cannot help but mourn for friends in/out of the industry and all who have been affected by the passage if Prop. 8 and for its defiance of the Constitution. The daily reverberations (see the front page of today’s L.A. Times) emphasize the importance of the California Supreme Court hearings next year. But meanwhile, Prop. 8 would try to have us believe all of us are not created equal. Frightening.
Things to look forward to in the new year: FLorence Henderson will appear at the Catalina Bar & Grill on Jan.30, 31 and Feb.1 with her show, “All the Lives of Me.” And there so many wonderful “lives” of Florence Henderson, a star on Broadway (“South Pacific,” “The King And I”), large and small screens, comedy, drama, her current talkshow, you name it. Her star contnues to shine. It’s no wonder she’s inducted into the Smithsonian Institute as part of the first permanent Entertainment History Exhibit. She is truly an American Institution. And so pretty!
P.S. Maybe “Milk” will help get people thinking. See it.
