Dr. Michael Debakey, who died July 11 at age 99, had included among his patients, Wayne Newton, 66. I had a conversation on the phone today with Wayne, as “Mr.Las Vegas” readies for another stand in Sin City. This time (again) with the MGM Grand, three weekly outings, starting July 31-Aug.6.
Newton’s web site says ducats are $100 “to meet, greet and have a foto with Wayne, $65 show only.” (Newton laughed when I told him of the ad.) We tried to figure out how many performances he’s racked up in the 40 years desert. We settled for 40,000 — and he’s planning on 100,000.
Newton’s entire career might have ended a year ago — had it not been for Dr.Debakey. who prescribed the heart medication over a three-month period. Wayne confidently told me, “He saved my life.” When Wayne was competing in “Dancing With The Stars,” an assistant to Dr. Debakey “flew out and was on the set on my last night — as I departed the show,” Newton told me. “I now have a completely clean bill of health,” he assured me. Vegas audiences will again hear “Danke Schoen,” starting July 31. Danke, Wayne.
