‘Ugly Betty’: Brace yourself for answers

Oct. 6 update:

The season 2 finale of “Ugly Betty” left viewers hanging on a cliff and our heroine with a big choice to make. Henry proposed, which would mean moving to Arizona. But Gio wants to take her on a Roman holiday and be “the guy.” Meanwhile Daniel has a son, but no job. Wow. So many questions. (Savvy fans probably already know how one of those dilemmas turns out, but I’ll never tell.)

No, I agree with Andy. Gio and Henry are not the show. As much as I LOVED Henry, the guys are not what the show are about. But somehow, many of the fans below are trying to word their questions carefully so it appears to be about the show, when in fact, it’s mostly about finding out about Gio to them.
And since this page doesn’t really say that we CAN’T leave additional comments here (aside from questions to Silvio), I think Andy has a right to make his/her comment.
By the way, I personally think that Gio was most definitely the rebound guy, too. Betty loved Henry, but I don’t think she had those same feelings for Gio at all.
But we’ll find out tonight for sure, won’t we? :)

  11. Lynn says:

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you couldn’t ask about what was going on in the show. So I guess I’ll ask a new question. Do you still use the green screen process since you’ve moved to New York and do you find filming in the actual city takes more time than in the studio with the special effects?

  12. James says:

Andy, your comments are no different from those of the many Gio fans here. This is a forum to ask questions of Mr. Horta. My question is: How closely are the characters in Ugly Betty based on the other Betty show around the world?

  13. Andy says:

Ok…this isn’t really a question, but just a comment for those Gio fans below: HE IS NOT THE SHOW! Last time I checked, this show is about Betty and her dreams, not her lovelife. But you all obviously care more about some secondary character and not her. Admit that to yourselves.
Henry is gone (thank God) and, well – let’s face it: As interesting as Gio was, he was still BETTY’S REBOUND GUY.

  14. Elena says:

    Hi Silvio!
First off, I just wanted to thank you for adapting “Yo Soy Betty, La Fea” for us here in the States. I grew up watching telenovelas and was so excited when I first heard about “Ugly Betty”. Its been a pleasure watching and enjoying it from day 1.
My question is: Why was the character of Gio written?
It seemed like all of season 2 was building up his and Betty’s relationship, and I’ve been looking forward to a continuation of it. However, I’ve heard rumors that he isn’t coming back after 3.04!!
I really do hope he wasn’t written to just to help get Henry out of the picture. I love that you’ve written him to be passionate, funny, and a great support to Betty and her dreams.

  15. MJ says:

    Silvio,
First off, I would like to say ‘thank you’ for helping create such a great show. I don’t normally watch much TV, but somehow, “Ugly Betty” has taken my heart like no other! It’s definitely a show that I can identify with.
Here are some of my questions:
    1) Now that two seasons have passed, is there anything that you regret/don’t regret doing?
    2) As a writer/producer, I’m assuming that your workday must be non-stop. What’s a typical day in your life like?
    3) Did you always know that you wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry? Or did you envision yourself working in other professions (i.e., doctor, lawyer, etc.)?
    4) If the decision were solely up to you, how many seasons would you like “Ugly Betty” to have?
    5) In writing for the show, do you and the other writers already have it planned in advance what direction the show will take throughout the season, or do you tend to take things one episode at a time?
    6) On average, how many rewrites does a normal episode script go through before it makes the final cut?
    7) Of all the storylines that haven’t been tackled yet on “Ugly Betty”, which one would you most be interested in pursuing in the future, if possible?
    8) So far, the show has had many special guest star appearances – everyone from Lil’ Bow-Wow to Victoria Beckham. Is there any celebrity that hasn’t appeared yet whom you dream of having on the show?
    Thanks for your time,
    MJ

  16. Sal says:

    Dear Silvio Horta,
Do you have a favourite episode from season 2?
Also, do you have any regrets about any of the season 2 episodes? Looking back, which episodes in particular would you have done differently and why?
Were you pleased or displeased with the episode “The Kids are Alright”? Why?
Do you like the character Gio? Do you think he had a positive or negative influence on Betty?
    Thank you! :)

  17. Pilar says:

    Silvio,
Do you visit the fan websites that fans have created for the show? Also, since we’ve had Angelica Valle on the show will we see any other characters from the various international incarnations of UB on the show? I’d love to see Daniel encounter Don Fernando (perhaps they could sing karaoke together?) from the Mexican version or have characters from the German version show up from German Mode? It’s such a joy for fans of the other versions to see characters they knew and loved to show up another version that they know and love.
    Thanks,
    Pilar

  18. Kimi says:

    Hello Silvio!
Thank you for giving us such an amazing show! I <3 Ugly Betty!
    - I love Gio and hope to see more of him! Will Gio still have a significant role this season in Betty's love life?
-Will Cliff be returning or are there other plans for Marc's love life?
-Will Amanda's real father ever make an appearance?

  19. Meghan says:

Hi Silvio! Just wanted to quickly tell you that I love Ugly Betty and have been hooked since early on in season 1. I think the cast, crew, and writers ALL do a fantastic job bringing the story to life.
    A few questions:
    1) Where is Betty’s career direction going to be going this season? How long are we going to see her being an assistant before we see her grow into the next position that she should have? And when she is promoted, how does this affect her dynamic with Daniel (since I love the friendship between them)?
    2) Will we ever see a softer side of Willie? She is always coming up with evil plans, but there has to be more behind her.
    3) I loved when Justin was involved with Mode, is there more chances this will happen again?
    4) Will there be a possibility of Gio returning more than once or twice? I ask because regardless if he is meant or not meant for Betty, I think he was a good friend and balance for Betty in her life. And she does need to focus on her career and I think he helped her to re-group and focus on that aspect. So if its not as a love interest, is it possible for him to still be around as a friend?
    5) How does the Daniel Junior story affect Daniel? Will this help him to grow up in different areas of his life? And if so, will this help him to grow more in his career as well?
That’s all! Thanks for all the hard work that you do and keep up the great job!

  20. Bonnie says:

Wow, there sure are a lot of Gio questions here! (Dude, that would be totally unfair to this Q/A session/contest if the same people were posting more than once.) Anyway, is he really that important to the show? Personally, I think that Henry had a bigger place in Betty’s heart than Gio did, but even then, I don’t think it would kill the show if either of them left. Sorry, but I’ve been watching since Season 1, and to me, that’s just not what the show is about. What happened to the show being about Betty from Season 1, you know? She was a totally different person in the first few episodes of that season than she was later on.
    But on to my questions:
Silvio, I want to know what’s going to happen with Wilhelmina’s baby. Are we actually going to see her raise a child? Please tell me NO!
And what about Daniel’s kid? I don’t think he’s really ready to have a son, but I do think it would be good for his growth process. Can you shed any light on that situation?
Also, can you tell us more about Grant Bowler from “LOST”? What’s his character going to be like?
Last, but not least, I’d also like to know what we’re going to see with Betty this season. A promotion, perhaps? How far will she get to go this season in her job?
    Thanks,
    Bonnie

  21. Sandra says:

    Hi,
I just want to take this opportunity to tell you that I loved Gio on Ugly Betty and it would really suck to see him go. I’m serious here, I’ve got a big family and the consensus is that Gio ROCKS! Every one I know is rooting for Gio…Gio and Betty make a great team together. He’s the one who pushed her to pursue her dreams right? And that’s what season 3 is about right?? So really it’s Gio you can thank for lighting a fire under the Ugly Betty creators and getting them to refocus on Betty as a ordinary-looking girl with an extraordinary spirit doing her best to make her dreams reality.
So my question to you is: Will Freddy Rodriguez continue to play Gio after Season 3, Episode 4? Because he’s recently been taken off the cast list on ABC.com as a recurring character. I’d like to know if we can hope to see Gio again on Ugly Betty. It’s going to be incredibly disappointing if he’s gone for good.
    Thanks, really appreciate this…
    Take care,
    Sandra.

  22. Cali says:

    Hi there Silvio!
First off: This is, hands down, my favorite show. I’ve actually never been much of a TV watcher, but from the first time I saw Betty (the season 1 Christmas episode) you had me hooked. Thanks for bringing this brilliant show to my TV every Thursday! Now, a couple of questions for you:
    1) What direction is Betty’s career going to be heading this season? I’d hate to see the dynamic duo split up… but at the same time I know she can’t be Daniel’s assistant forever. How are you planning to progress her career without disrupting the wonderful dynamic those two have going?
    2) I love seeing Justin participate in the fashion world. Will he get more opportunities to show off his talents at MODE this season? And will Marc consequently get more opportunities to act as a mentor? Er, not that he’s necessarily the best role model….
    3) And lastly: What did Daniel give Betty for her birthday in “24 Candles?” Kind of random, but we didn’t get to see her open it and I’m curious. :-)
Thanks again. I’m on pins and needles waiting for the season three premiere!
    ~Cali

  23. Anne says:

    Dear Silvio,
While some reviews of Season 2 were not altogether positive, one bright spot was the addition of Freddy Rodriguez. That is not a question, just a fact. Sorry, I had to say it!
    Here are my questions:
1)Will Freddy Rodriguez be back for more than one episode (as rumored) this season? If not, what is the reasoning behind this decision? It seems you (and the fans, I might add) invested a lot in building the relationship between Betty and Gio just to throw it all away. Is this an Ugly Betty move or more to do with Freddy’s availability (as speculated). Frankly, I found the rapport thrilling to watch and really it WAS the main reason I tuned in for Season 2.
2)How much influence for storylines do you take from fans (i.e. do read blogs, internet sites, etc. to keep up with what the fans want and what they are thinking about storylines)?
    3) When writing some of the great witty, sarcastic, (and sometimes mean) comments typical of Marc, Amanda, and Wilhelmina, how do you and the staff decide where to “draw the line” between humor, good taste, and political correctness. I personally love that Ugly Betty pushes the envelope!
4)Lastly, do you purposefully try to steer your promos and leak spoiler information that may not necessarily be how the episode in question will play out? How do you keep secrets from leaking out prior to airing?
    Thanks!

  24. Junamrsgrl says:

Hi Silvio, this is so cool! I love UB and have since it first aired here in the US. I do have a couple of questions though.
1.) Ok, seriously. Is Fey really dead?? I don’t know why but I feel like I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop here…
2.)Are we going to see some kind of resolution between Christina and Stuart’s (sp?) character? I like them together, but I can’t make up my mind on him, he seems like a real schmoozer. If that makes any sense.
    3.)Is that baby really Bradford’s??
4.) Please please please tell me we’re not seeing the last of Gio this season as a semi-regular character. I really love how Betty and Gio interact and would like to see them actually hook up eventually instead of suffering because of horrible timing forever….Also, I’m not sure why Jesse’s character is being thrown in to the mix when you released statements saying that it was time for Betty to focus on her career and not her love life….Just a little confused.
    Thanks!

  25. lauren says:

My question is (like many have also asked) will Freddy Rodriguez be returning more than once/twice this season as Gio? I love the relationship between him and Betty and it would be sad if they didn’t get the chance they deserve!
    Thanks :)

  26. Ashley says:

    Dear Silvio Horta,
Hello I am Ashley a major Ugly Betty Fan, I love it since first the season it is great show and so far you are doing a amazing job with it, and you are very lucky to have great cast by your side :) Also I am very thrilled you and the cast moved to New York, smart move. I would love thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us and give us the scoop for this season and more. Now I have some questions That I would like you to answer for me, a thanks in advance if you.
    1. This question is about the condition of a future eppy, Are you planning to do a musical eppy for Ugly Betty, if you are,we will be able to see it this upcoming season and what plans do have for it? We will see the cast sing New York, New york again? :)
    2. Tell me will Daniel find out that betty knew about chirstina/willi’s baby?, or does Daniel already know?, but if does find out will this cause hardship for Daniel and Betty?
    4. Claire, will be any news storylines and twists, or romance for her I was thinking you should bring Tony Danza in and give her second chance on love, what do you think?
    5. Jesse? is this character going to be a long time thing? what do you have for him and betty? Is This going be another Hetty and Getty ficaso or this is going something good and long term?
    4. Also, I was wondering what are yours plans for Daniel and Betty this season? Silvio please answer me this because I mostly watch this because of Daniel and Betty, I am 100% a Detty shipper fan, and I am dying to know if have any great for news for us about these two, like hugs, presents or maybe a kiss in the near future for them? because Detty fans across the US believe this will a good season for them. :)
Well That is all questions I have for you silvio, again thank you for taking the time to chat with us fans, I hope you answer my questions, and make my day better yet by me winning a season 2 dvd box set. :) Give a shout out for us fans to the cast and crew and tell them keeping working and that they are doing a great job! Thanks
    Ashley :)

  27. Sal says:

    Dear Silvio Horta,
I can’t tell you just how much I enjoy the show! I’ve been hooked since I watched the first episode of season 1. I think it’s very special and unique. As well as being entertaining, it provides a much needed balance to other shows on TV and many young people can look to Betty as a role model. She really is amazing and so is America Ferrera!
I’m happy to hear about the new direction the show will be taking and it’s going to be exciting to see the transformation in Betty as she goes after her dreams….LOL! An image of ‘Betty the butterfly’ emerging from a cocoon just popped into my head :)
S2 had it’s problems, huh? Well, it looks like you’ve made efforts to remedy that in S3!…I’d just like you to know that the addition of Gio to the cast was a really…really…REALLY good move. ;)
I find it amazing that you’re actually offering us spoilers!! I’m just a little bit doubtful we’ll get the answers we’re after :D Here is the one that’s been causing many fans anxiety (yes, believe it) and desperately want answered.
-Will you bring Gio back for more that 1 episode? (And don’t say yes if you mean he will be back for 2!)
I’m ok with waiting to find out everything else but the fate of Gio on Ugly Betty is the one unknown which really bothers me.
Here are some things I’m curious about…
-What other actors were considered for the role of Gio?
-Why was Freddy Rodriguez ultimately chosen?
-How was the character of Gio developed?
-Was he based on anyone in real life?
-Is it a team of writers who work on developing a role or is it just one.
-What are writers like? Are they super intelligent? How do they come up with story lines that no one else can guess.
-Are they payed well? (I hope so)
-How many writers work on UB scripts?
-How does a TEAM write a script, isn’t there conflict about what should happen?
-Are UB writers passionate about their work? or is it just something they know they do well and pays the bills?
-When you see an episode of Ugly Betty, is it what you envisioned when you were writing the script?
-Are there changes made which deviate from the script that annoy you?
-Do you plan what is going to happen for an entire season right at the beginning? Or do you plan as you go along? Is the direction the story will take based on audience reactions and TV ratings?
-Can you tell us what a day in the life of Silvio Horta is like?
-Have the writers of UB ever written for other shows? If so, which ones?
I’ve got many more but I’ll leave it here, I know you must be busy.
    Thanks for your time
    -Sal :)

Hey, Silvio! Me encanta tu programa Ugly Betty muchisima y no puedo esperar para el Jueves!!!
Seriously, I love this show and the humor and heart it brings to television. It shows the reality, intelligence, and love of an American Latino family. That has sorely been missing and I’m proud to say that I watch the show as an American Chicana!!
Now even more seriously, que pasa con Gio??? Freddy Rodriguez was a wonderful addition to the cast in S2 and I would love to see him back for more than one season–as a love interest or not. He’s a great Latino actor and I love how he represents Latinos on television. Will he be back more than once? Will we visit Gio’s Deli ever again? I never got to have my Italian Trio!!

  29. Kay says:

    Hi there Silvio –
Love Ugly Betty, makes me laugh all the time! I love so many of the characters.
I’m also a Gio fan and hope that you bring him back for more than one episode in season 3.
My question is: did you expect FR to have such chemistry with America, and did the relationship grow as a result? Or was their relationship always the plan?
    Thanks!

  30. M says:

    Hello Silvio!
Well, I’m italian and sorry for my bad english :/
I love this show so much and I’m waiting for the new season!
I’m so exicted!! I love especially the couple Betty/Daniel (I’m Detty, yeah ^^)
I love their relationship.. is so beautiful and special.
But I wish that one day, there is something more than just friends. It could happen? Of course not now.. is so early, but in the future, it will be awesome! I love them so much yeah =)
    Thanks
    Roby from Italy :)

  32. Jo says:

Can you tell us more about the roles that actors Grant Bowler and Val Emmich will be playing?
For example, I understand that Grant Bowler’s character will be playing the CFO at Mode? Is he more likely to be a friend or foe to Daniel? And can you tell us more about Val Emmich’s character, Jesse? I heard that Val is not just an actor – he’s also a musician in real life – so will we be seeing him perform in a future episode of “Ugly Betty”? Also, are both of these characters expected to appear throughout Season 3?
Finally, I noticed that the show will be having Regis & Kelly, Lindsay Lohan, and Adriana Lima as special guests on the show. Can you give us any hint about any other special guests who may appear later on in the season?
    Thanks!

  33. Sarah says:

    I have a few questions!
It’s been said that Betty’s wardrobe in Season 3 would be adapting to show that she’s starting to pick up fashion ideas from having worked at Mode. Why go that way since she’s always so worried about becoming a “Mode Girl”? Or do you see her developing a fashion sense separate from her becoming a “Mode Girl”?
Any clues or hints as to some of the storylines we might get to see for Amanda?
Season 2 Wilhelmina ended with us generally despising her. Will she have any redemption in Season 3?
Gio was my favorite new character from Season 2–will we get to see him in more than one or two episodes next season?

  34. Marci says:

I’ve always wondered – why does Hilda have such a strong accent and Betty has no accent – not even a New York accent?

  35. Marissa says:

    Hello Silvio,
I saw this a few days ago, and now I have time to sit down and give it my attention. Thanks for giving us a great show like “Ugly Betty”! There’s really nothing on TV like it. :)
Here are some questions that I have:
    1) Will we see more from Claire’s magazine, “Hot Flash”, in the future?
    2) Other than Betty meeting new people (i.e., like Val Emmich’s Jesse) and moving into a new apartment, what else can we expect to see happen with her this season? For instance, will she finally write an article that will get published? And will she be taking on more responsibilities this season?
    3) What can we expect to see with Amanda and Marc? Will either of them get promoted?
    4) Since actress Rebecca Romijn will be taking a recurring role this season, what can we expect with her character, Alexis, during her stint on Season 3? Will she, Daniel, and Claire finally be able to come together as a family, or will they continue to be at odds-end this season?
    5) Can you tell us more about what we can expect to see with Ignacio, Justin, and Hilda this season? With Hilda, will we see more happen with her salon business?
    6) Daniel and Betty have one of the best relationships on the show – constantly evolving and growing. What can we expect with them in Season 3? Aside from Wilhelmina, will they have any new enemies to contend with this time around? Or will they actually find new allies in doing battle with her?
    7) Can you give us any hints about what will happen with the Daniel/Daniel Jr. storyline? I have to admit that I find it very hard to believe that Daniel Jr. is really Daniel’s son, especially since the results of the paternity test were left hanging at the end of Season 2.
    8) I couldn’t help but notice that there’s been quite a baby boom on the set of “Ugly Betty” with various cast members, especially with the actresses. Is there any possibility that you may incorporate this into future storylines?
Thanks for taking the time to read this! I appreciate it. :)
    Marissa

  36. bgroman says:

I already have the S2 DVD so I don’t need to win it, but it’s nice you have a prize. More Gio in S3, that’s all the prize I want.
I loved every Gio scene in S2. The witty, smart-ass, pushy, sexy and romantic character is a perfect match for Betty. FR is a very talented actor and he has great chemistry with AF. The Gio/Betty scenes were worth watching and re-watching.
My question for Horta is – have you signed FR up for another batch of episodes? And hey, why not make him a regular cast member?

  37. Maria says:

please please tell me if we are going to see more gio in season 3 episodes! i really love him for betty i think he is great!

  38. Beatrice B says:

I wonder why after the beautiful and entertaining episodes of season 2 where we got a build up of a relationship between the new character Gio and Betty, we are told of a potential new romance for Betty (i.e. Val Emmich’s Jesse).
I would have understood that we could get a hold on Gio/Betty relationship because there is a whole new “independent girl” concept for next season. But bringing another lover boy after people were charmed by this new guy?!
My question is: if we are going to have romance next season why you had to bring another unknown character instead of building the Gio and Betty problem-free relationship?

  39. Lynn says:

    Hi –
I was wondering if you are really going to make us suffer the living hell of building up Betty and Gio and never letting them get together.
    Lynn
