South Africa dances ‘Laaste Wals’

Amateur dance show holding auditions

JOHANNESBURG — Hot on the heels of the craze for dance reality TV shows, Afrikaans-language channel Kyknet has bowed an original reality skein for amateur hoofers, “Die Laaste Wals.”

Cape Town-based producer Whammy is holding auditions in Johannesburg, Kimberley and Cape Town to select dancers. The top eight couples from each region will compete to be among the finalists who will dance against each other weekly in the elimination phase of the contest. The winner will receive R500,000 ($50,000).

Screening dates have not yet been finalized. Kyknet is available on MultiChoice’s DStv platform.

South African versions of the BBC’s international hit “Strictly Come Dancing” (“Dancing With the Stars” Stateside) in which celebrities pair up with professional dancers, have been a ratings winner for pubcaster channel SABC2. It started screening its fifth season of the show on Oct. 2.
